Spring Break is here! Time to head home, visit family, or escape somewhere warmer and top up your tan. The last thing you want to be doing is worrying about your job or internship search, right? On the contrary – this break is a great opportunity to get ahead on your search, especially in today’s crowded job market.
The rest of the semester creeps up quite quickly once you return back from the Break, so while you have this time to yourself away from your schoolwork, there are a few career-related things which you should consider getting done – outlined here, here and here – which include:
- Signing up to LinkedIn (or updating your profile)
- Researching employers/attending career fairs
- Setting up informational interviews
This can be tricky to do if you have already made plans to go on vacation, however, there’s no harm in doing a little career work while you’re soaking up the sun.
If you have gone away with friends, then this blog points out the potential pitfalls of embarrassing Spring Break pictures finding their way onto social networks: as employers routinely use Facebook, Twitter and so on to screen potential employees, it’s best to make sure any awkward pictures of you stay offline and those embarrassing tweets never get posted in the first place.
Need help with some of the basics? We can help you once you get back from your break! On 3/18 we have our Resume Basics and Creating Cover Letters workshops, on 3/19 we are running our Job Search Strategies and Internship Search Strategies workshops and we are holding our Ace Your Interview workshop on 3/20. Please remember to RSVP through GWork for any of our events.
Plus, when you get back from Break, don’t forget to attend the Startup DC Student Career Expo that has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 19, 1-4pm, Marvin Center Grand Ballroom. Some of the hottest DC-area startup organizations will be there to talk about opportunities at their companies!
Have fun and enjoy your Spring Break!
